It has four strings of different pitches and is played with a horse-hair bow while being supported on the left shoulder (regardless of right or left handedness). If you are watching an orchestra play, look for the largest section of strings and you have yourself the violin section. Now listen for the main melodic line and many high notes played in rapid succession and you're most likely hearing the violins.
