A beautiful, powerful instrument similar to the human voice, the cello is well known for its range and versatility. An orchestra simply would not be complete without the grounding sound of the cello. The cello often plays rhythms that keep the orchestra playing together and notes that round out the chords. When the violins stop hogging the spotlight, they often give the melody to the cello. The cello truly gets the best of both worlds.
The strings on the cello include a low C string, which is the same as the viola. It is played on the floor and not on your shoulder and music written for the cello is predominantly written in Bass clef, making it another good instrument for students that are already familiar with the piano.
As you might have guessed, because of its size, the cello comes with a higher price tag. It is also heavier and more difficult to carry. The length of the strings are better suited for larger hands but that does not necessarily mean that those with smaller hands should shy away. The cello is fragile and should never be left in a car for extended periods of time.
